Pig Riding
This occurred early in 1970. A neighboring farmer’s sow was brought to our farm by trailer to be bred to our boar. The trailer was backed to the door of the pigsty, which is an extension of our living quarters, and the ramp lowered. To prevent the sow from escaping, two men stood at the side of the ramp, one on either side, arms spread and legs apart, to form a human barrier. The expectation was that this would compel the sow to go straight through the pigsty door and then to her new mate. The sow, however, may have had different ideas about her upcoming nuptials. Spying an open space, she dashed between the legs of one of the men. Completely surprised by this maneuver, he was lifted off his feet and came down facing backwards astride the sow’s back. As he shouted, and laughed, the sow galloped across the court, eventually to be convinced that she should go to the boar.
