The Misunderstood Noontime Prayer
During the war even young civilians from Hungary, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine were forced to leave their homes. They were compelled to work on farms and in factories in Germany.
A young Ukrainian was allocated to our neighbour’s farm, the "Bichamoar",
As was custom, we had prayers before and after lunch. The farmers and their children, servants, maids and workers all stood around the table and gazed reverently towards the Holy cross during the prayers. For some unknown reason, the Ukrainian was distracted and had averted his eyes. Horrified, the farmer noticed and indicated that he should look up to God. The prisoner reacted immediately and left the room.
Shortly afterwards, he came back bearing a feather duster. This was a dried goose wing that was used as a sort of brush. The Ukranian jumped up onto the bench and cleaned the cobwebs off the Cross with the feather duster!
